I’m planning on flying to Washington DC in January. Should I buy my airline tickets now or wait until after Christmas? Do prices go down after the holidays?

It is sometimes best to get your tickets early. Some of the airlines work on the basis the earlier the cheaper. Rates change daily and usually up. And some airlines if they see that a plane is filling they will raise the rate on the last few seats knowing it is a popular flight. I could check into it for you, as I am a travel agent. email me or go to

There is no “best time” except that fares are usually cheaper more than 14 days before departure. If prices do do down after the holidays, it will be because sales are slow. It won’t have anything to do with the fact that you’re buying after a holiday.
Airfares change constantly based on supply and demand. If there are too many unsold seats, the airline may increase the number of discount seats and/or reduce prices. If seats are selling fast, they will reduce the number of discount seats and/or raise prices.
Predicting airfares is like predicting what the stock market will do next week. They may be lower. They may be higher. Who knows? That’s part of the furstration of buying airline tickets.

It should be cheaper now. There is a list of great cheap travel sites at One site compare all the airlines for the best fare.
