Why were airline tickets so cheap when the cost of oil was so expensive?

You Are Dry Shaving Me asked:

now that oil is cheaper than before, airline tickets are more expensive?

Making up for lost ground maybe?

Last year at this time I got a round trip for $260…..this year it’s $480.

One reason why airline tickets to some destinations were cheap in the past is so that the airline concerned does not have to fly half empty planes. I’ve seen flights from London to Dublin for as little as £1 (one English pound).

Okay - so now with the recession and all that, some smaller airlines have gone bust - there is in fact less competition, thus major airlines no longe feel any need to cut the price of tickets - they’re getting lots of business anyway, due to it being Christmas and New Year when millions of us travel.

But, you wait until after the New Year - boy, you’ll see some bargains then. However, by Spring, the prices will go up again.

OPEC are once more putting on the squeeze and closing some of their taps - thus oil prices and gas at the pumps etc, will probably start to climb again soon - maybe couple of weeks, if not already in some areas.

Because airlines have too pay taxes on empty seats.

As long as us lower and middle class refuse to pay the money for these things Prices will go down.It is all about demand and if we don’t create a demand the rich companies and stock holders have to be less greedy.selling something for less profit is better than selling nothing for a large profit.

Great question. As usual there a multitude of reasons to raise prices (with profuse apologies and crocodile tears) and rarely any to lower them once the manufactured crisis has passed.
