How do I get cheap southwest (or other) airline tickets?

I’m going on vacation in October. About a month ago, Southwest had tickets from Nashville to Philly for $43 a person as the cheapest price. Well, I procastinated, and now the cheapest price has more than doubled. Is it possible that that deal will come back up again? Or did I just lose it…I’m very unfamiliar with booking airline tickets and when airlines offer deals like that. Will the price only go up as I get closer to October? Any suggestions? I’m buying for 2 people and don’t want to spend $400 on plane tickets.
