Generally best not to call the airline to book, as most of them charge extra for that. Checking the airlines’ websites is a good idea.
It would almost always cost more, not less, to buy two one-way tickets.

I would suggest comparing prices between a round trip and 2 one-ways. I got a better deal by booking to one-ways from Oakland to San Diego then doing a round trip. It just depends on dates and times you plan to travel. I would suggest trying this website:
